| While the more recent models
of Canon and Nikon cameras can be fully controlled from a USB cable with
the proper software, the older models require a special long exposure
cable connected to their "bulb" port to achieve exposures longer than 30
seconds. For Canon cameras, I offer a wired cable that plugs into
a serial port on your PC, and for those without serial ports (i.e. most
modern laptops) a USB-to-serial adapter to allow the serial cables to be
plugged into a USB port. For Nikon cameras, I offer a wireless
infra-red controller that plugs into a serial port on your PC. It
can also be used with the USB-to-serial adapter I carry for those who
have only USB ports.
The Canon models that require a long
exposure cable are the 10D, 300D, 350D(XT), 400D(Xti), 20D and 30D.
All models more recent than these do not require a special cable for
long exposures. |

Maxim DL (www.cyanogen.com) ...another Swiss Army Knife all-purpose tool for DSLR and CCD astrophotographers.
DSLR Shutter (www.stark-labs.com)
by Craig Stark is a free application for automating imaging sessions. Backyard EOS (www.backyardeos.com)
a comprehensive capture and automation tool for DSLR astrophotography. Please note that these programs require that the USB cable supplied with the camera to also be connected for downloading images, setting capture mode, ISO settings, etc. The long exposure cable does not provide "communications" with the camera and is ONLY used to directly control the shutter via the camera's "bulb" port to over-ride the 30 second exposure limitation imposed with the standard USB connection. For owners Canon Pro DSLR's (D30, D60, 10D, 20D,20Da, 30D, 1DS, 1DS MII, 1D MII, etc)...

These cameras require a special proprietary Canon connector known as an "N3". This connector is only available on devices manufactured by Canon such as the TC-80N3 Timer Remote Controller, the RS-80N3 Remote Switch, the RA-N3 Remote Switch Adapter, or the ET-1000N3 Extension Cord. Along with the order for a cable, the customer must send me one of these devices to modify. I will insert a male and female 3.5mm 3-conductor plug and jack into the device's cable so that when plugged together, the device can be used normally. However, the camera end of the cable with the N3 connector can also be unplugged and used with a serial port cable that has been configured with a mating 3.5mm 3-conductor plug. If you don't have a Canon N3 accessory to send, contact me directly and arrangements can be made for me to purchase the accessory and include it in your price. selected Nikon DSLR's
via an Infra-Red Remote Control. The NIRS series of controllers listed
below are composed of a custom micro-controller driving an infrared LED in a
small package that can be mounted on your telescope with Velcro (supplied) or
otherwise in a position where it will illuminate the front of the camera when
in use. The controllers include an integral serial port cable and
obtain their
operating power from the port itself so battery replacement will
